ULVAC-RIKO announces the TD-1 Thermal Diffusivity measurement system by Xe Flash Method. Suitable for R&D and QC of Thermal Conductivity Polymer Materials.

ULVAC-RIKO, Inc. today announced the release of Xe Flash TD-1, a compact and energy saving solution for measurement thermal diffusivity utilizing the xenon flash method.ULVAC-RIKO, Inc. today announced the release of Xe Flash TD-1, a compact and energy saving solution for measurement thermal diffusivity utilizing the xenon flash method.

Xenon light, with its characteristic low energy and short heat time, enables the TD-1 thermal diffusivity measuring system to measure polymer materials of μm order thickness, and other low thermal diffusivity samples such as adhesive, paint, and others. The TD-1 thermal diffusivity measurement system comes standard with its own multilayer analysis software capable of calculating thermal diffusivity of polymer film layer on top of substrates or adhesive attached in-between substrates. The TD-1 can also measure the thermal diffusivity along the thickness direction as well as in-plane direction; as such, for evaluation of materials with different thermal diffusivity in the horizontal and perpendicular directions to the molecular orientation such as liquid crystal polymers, no other addition equipment is necessary. Moreover, depending on the different properties of the sample being measure, to prevent oxidization and improve thermal distribution, the TD-1 is capable of measurement using normal atmosphere, vacuum, or other various gases.

As modern devices and electronics increase in sophistication and density, the importance of polymer materials is increasingly becoming evident. Today, polymer materials are used in a wide range of application. In general, due to their low thermal conductivity, polymer materials are easily damaged by laser irradiation when measured or analyzed. ULVAC-RIKO has developed the TD-1 thermal diffusivity measurement system specifically for the evaluation of thermo-physical properties of polymer materials such as high-function films, which is difficult to measure by existing laser based methods.

[Explanation of technical term]

1. Thermal diffusivity α (m2 s-1)

Thermal diffusivity is index parameter expressing how quick materials conduct heat. For example, in the case of metal materials, when one side is heated, the other one is quickly heated at once. However, in the case of wood building materials, when one side is heated, other side is not quickly heated. This indicates that the thermal diffusivity of metal is larger than that of wood.

2. Thermal conductivity λ (W m-1 K-1)

Thermal conductivity is index parameter expressing how large materials conduct heat. By using thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity is shown as following equation.

λ = α C ρ

C (J kg-1 K-1):specific heat capacity ρ (kg m-3):density
